EV Charger Grant Edinburgh — £500 OZEV Guide
Edinburgh has Scotland's highest EV adoption rate, supported by the Scottish Government's separate Home Energy Scotland EV grant alongside the UK-wide OZEV £500 chargepoint grant. This guide covers Edinburgh-specific cross-pavement policy, World Heritage area constraints, and the renter / flat-owner pathway.
Edinburgh at a glance — what's different in Scotland
Edinburgh is part of the UK-wide OZEV chargepoint grant scheme, so the £500 per-socket grant applies identically here as in England. Edinburgh residents can additionally access the Scottish Government's separate Home Energy Scotland EV charger loan scheme (interest-free up to £6,000) which can be combined with the OZEV grant for those upgrading to higher-end systems.
Around 35% of Edinburgh properties have off-street parking — the lowest of any major UK city after inner London. The Old Town and New Town tenement-style flats are particularly common. This makes the on-street parking and landlord routes more relevant in Edinburgh than the renter / flat owner private-bay route.
Three OZEV grant routes for Edinburgh residents (plus Scottish loan)
- Renters and flat owners — newer apartment blocks (Quartermile, Edinburgh Park, Granton Harbour)
- On-street parking households — Old Town, New Town, Stockbridge, Marchmont, Bruntsfield tenements
- Landlords — substantial student-let market (University of Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, Napier)
- Home Energy Scotland EV charger loan — interest-free up to £6,000 (separate Scottish scheme, can stack with OZEV grant)
Cross-pavement scheme — Edinburgh & the Lothians
The City of Edinburgh Council operates a pilot cross-pavement scheme launched in 2024 and expanded in 2025. The scheme is more selective than London or Manchester because of the high concentration of conservation and World Heritage areas.
| Council | Cross-pavement scheme | Approval time |
|---|---|---|
| City of Edinburgh Council | Active (heritage-restricted) | 6–12 weeks |
| East Lothian | Pilot scheme | 8–14 weeks |
| Midlothian | Case-by-case | 10–14 weeks |
| West Lothian | Pilot scheme | 8–14 weeks |
Edinburgh has the largest UNESCO World Heritage area in the UK, covering the Old Town and New Town. Cross-pavement channels are typically refused in these areas on heritage grounds. Outside the heritage zone, Kerbo Charge with flush thermoplastic finish is preferred over Gul-e brush-seal because of conservation officer requirements.
Edinburgh install costs
Edinburgh labour rates are at UK national average — typically £30–£50 cheaper than inner London.
| Scenario | Pre-grant fitted | Net after £500 grant |
|---|---|---|
| Renter, Quartermile apartment (Pod Point Solo 3) | £849 | £349 |
| Flat owner, Granton Harbour leasehold (Ohme ePod) | £849 | £349 |
| On-street, Marchmont tenement (Kerbo Charge + charger) | £2,049 | £1,549 |
| World Heritage area: not eligible (cross-pavement refused) | — | Use ORCS public charging |
| Landlord, 8-flat tenement conversion (per socket) | £1,200 | £700 |
Common Edinburgh scenarios
- Quartermile / Edinburgh Park / Granton Harbour: modern apartment blocks with allocated underground parking. Renter scheme straightforward.
- Marchmont / Bruntsfield / Stockbridge tenements: on-street parking dominant. Cross-pavement available outside World Heritage zone, requires Kerbo Charge for heritage areas adjacent.
- Old Town / New Town (UNESCO): cross-pavement typically refused. Use ORCS public charging or charge at workplace / public network.
- Student-let HMOs (Newington, Bruntsfield, Marchmont): landlord scheme route. Edinburgh's student population (5 universities) creates high demand for EV-equipped student housing.
